Best dehumidifier for an apartment

Most advice about apartment dehumidifiers is about capacity, and capacity is the one thing an apartment almost never gets wrong. Run the standard sizing method across ordinary apartment footprints, from a studio to a three-bedroom, at every dampness level, and the largest answer is 17 pints/day on the modern rating scale. A standard 50-pint unit clears that about 2.9 times over. What actually goes wrong for a renter is the water: where it goes, how often, and who carries it.

So this page does the sizing once, properly and on both rating scales, and then moves on to the decisions that are specific to an apartment: how long a bucket lasts, how to drain one without drilling anything, and which listings publish numbers that survive a check against themselves. The recommendation splits in two at the end, because a renter who can run a hose to a bathtub and a renter who cannot are buying for different constraints.

An apartment is where floor area starts to count again

The sizing convention almost every guide uses comes from an AHAM table built on a 500 sq ft reference space, with a fixed increment for every further 500 sq ft. On our small dehumidifier page we showed that below 500 sq ft the area term does nothing at all. A whole apartment is usually past that first boundary, which means the area term switches on — but in steps, not smoothly.

The step is sharper than a tidy chart suggests. A very damp space of 500 sq ft needs 9 pints/day on the modern scale. Add one square foot and it needs 11. Nothing physical happened at 501 sq ft; that is simply how the table is built, and our size calculator reproduces it faithfully rather than smoothing it into a precision it does not have. The practical reading is that an apartment near a boundary should be sized on the upper step.

Read the two figures in each cell as the same requirement written in two languages. In 2019 the Department of Energy moved the dehumidifier test from 80°F to 65°F. Colder air gives up less water, so the same machine now earns a lower number, and the scales sit roughly 40% apart. Which way that bites depends on what the old number described. If an older chart tells you to buy a 24-pint unit and you buy a machine labelled 24 today, you have bought considerably more capacity than the chart meant — you oversize. If instead you are relying on an old machine’s label to meet a duty measured on today’s scale, it will deliver less than its label suggests. Why capacity is not the apartment decision

Take the worst cell in that table — the three-bedroom at the extremely wet end — and it still comes to 17 pints/day. A 50-pint unit carries about 2.9× that. There is no ordinary apartment in the table that a 50-pint unit is too small for.

That headroom is not waste. A machine with spare capacity reaches its humidity setpoint faster and then spends most of the day idle, which matters more in a space you live and sleep in than in a basement. At the load of a very damp apartment it runs somewhere between 4.3 and 6.7 hours a day across the footprints above, once the space is dry. The rest of the time the compressor is off.

Could a smaller machine do the job? On capacity, yes: the entry-level compressor class around 30 pints/day also clears every cell. We do not link one, for a reason set out in full on the small dehumidifier page — the 30-pint listings we hold publish a capacity and a wattage that cannot both be true. Nor would a smaller machine help with the problem the rest of this page is about, which has nothing to do with capacity.

The bucket is the apartment problem

A basement often has a floor drain or a sump. A crawl space gets a hose run to the outside. An apartment typically has neither, and a portable dehumidifier with nowhere to send its water stops the moment its bucket is full. How often that happens is arithmetic: the bucket’s volume divided by the water the machine is removing.

Once the apartment is at its target humidity, the machine removes roughly what the space produces each day — for our one-bedroom example, 11 pints, or 1.38 gallons. Treating the sizing figure as the daily load is a simplification, the same one our running-cost guide makes; your apartment could produce more or less. Put the listings’ own tank sizes against it:

Tank volume as each listing states it, divided by a load of 11 pints/day (modern scale). A float switch stops the machine before the bucket is brim-full, so real intervals run somewhat shorter than these.

The spread is wide for machines of identical rated capacity. The AEOCKY listing states a 0.8 gallon tank, which at this load means emptying it roughly every 14 hours — 1.7 times a day. The Frigidaire listing states 2.7 gallons, or about every 2.0 days. Same capacity, same job, a 3.4× difference in how often someone carries water through the apartment.

And that is the easy phase. For the first days, while the machine pulls a damp apartment down to target, it runs flat out. At its rated 50 pints/day — a test-condition figure, and removal slows as the air dries, so treat this as an upper reference rather than a prediction — the AEOCKY bucket would fill in about 3.1 hours and the Frigidaire bucket in about 10.4. A bucket that fills in under eight hours will not see a night through without a hose.

One more number that matters more in an apartment than anywhere else: a full 2.7-gallon bucket holds about 23 lb of water. A bigger bucket means fewer trips, and heavier ones, carried through a living room to a sink or a bathtub.

Losing the bucket without drilling anything

Every listing in this comparison advertises continuous draining through a hose, and for a renter it is the single most useful feature on the machine. Nothing about it is permanent. There are two routes, and which one you have depends entirely on height.

Gravity, into a bathtub or shower. Water only runs downhill, so the drain has to be lower than the hose port on the back of the machine, with no rise anywhere along the run. A tub or shower drain is at floor level, which makes it the renter’s best option: park the machine in or beside the bathroom, run an ordinary garden hose into the tub, and the bucket never fills again. The catch is placement — the machine now lives where the drain is, not where the damp is, which we come back to below. A pump, if the drain is higher. A kitchen or bathroom sink sits above the hose port of a floor-standing machine, so gravity will not reach it. That needs a condensate pump, or a dehumidifier with one built in. The flow a pump has to handle here is trivial — our one-bedroom load is about 0.057 gallons per hour, which any pump beats easily. The listings, checked against their own numbers

A listing that publishes both a tested capacity and a nameplate wattage has told you how much water it claims to remove per unit of electricity. Divide one by the other and you get litres per kilowatt-hour. This is not a measurement of anything — it is each listing held up against itself, and it can only show that a listing is inconsistent, never that a machine is good. The ceiling we allow a refrigerant machine is 3.0 L/kWh, set generously so that a borderline listing passes.

3 of the 5 listings publish a wattage and pass: Midea at 2.10 L/kWh, Frigidaire at 2.10 L/kWh and AEOCKY at 2.59 L/kWh. None of the listings that publish a wattage fails, which is a better result than the 30-pint class managed. The other 2GE and Manastin — publish no wattage at all. That does not make them bad machines; it means there is nothing to hold their capacity claim against, so we do not recommend on it.

Among the ones that pass, the AEOCKY spends the least nameplate energy per pint, about 19% less than the Midea and Frigidaire. That is a difference between two listings’ published figures, not a metered result. At our one-bedroom load it comes to roughly 14 kWh a month — multiply by your own electricity rate; the running-cost guide shows the whole method. Note too that on its own figures the Frigidaire matches the Midea on capacity and on wattage exactly, and states a larger bucket.

Worked example

A very damp 750 sq ft one-bedroom, no floor drain

A one-bedroom apartment of 750 sq ft, sitting around 60–70% RH with damp patches on an outside wall. Past the first 500 sq ft boundary, so the area term adds one step. The nearest drain below the machine is the bathtub.

Any of these machines has the capacity. With a hose into the tub, the bucket stops mattering and the choice comes down to whose published numbers hold up. Without one, the tank size is the difference between emptying it once every couple of days and emptying it before breakfast and again before bed.

What we recommend, in two branches

If you can run a hose to a tub, shower or floor drain, tank size is irrelevant and the case is the one the listings can support: the AEOCKY 50-pint, the unit in this comparison whose published capacity and wattage pass the check with the lowest nameplate energy per pint. Its drawback, stated plainly: it also has the smallest bucket here, at 0.8 gallons. Without a hose that means emptying it 1.7 times a day at our one-bedroom load, so do not buy it unless the hose is part of the plan.

If the bucket is how you will live with it — no drain within reach, or a lease that makes a hose across the hallway impractical — buy the largest tank among the listings whose numbers check out: the Frigidaire 50-pint, at a stated 2.7 gallons. At our one-bedroom load that is emptying it about every 2.0 days instead of every 14 hours. The trade-off, in the same breath: it spends about 24% more nameplate energy per pint than the hose pick, and a full bucket weighs around 23 lb. One caveat we cannot resolve from here: none of these listings states its tank size in its title, so the tank figure cannot be cross-checked the way capacity can. Confirm it on the listing before you buy on it.

Whichever branch you are in, size on the tested pints-per-day figure and ignore the coverage claim printed in the title. Coverage claims are not comparable between makers: across our corpus the claimed area per rated pint spans a 9.4× range, and the 4 units above that state one, all rated alike, claim anything from 3,500 to 5,000 sq ft. Capacity is measured against a standard. Coverage is written by the marketing department.

Noise, doors, and where it has to sit

In an apartment the dehumidifier is in the room with you, and noise is the complaint that gets these machines switched off. We will not name a quietest unit. Some listings put a decibel figure in the title; none state the distance, the fan speed or whether the compressor was running when it was taken, and a decibel number without those is a claim, not a measurement. What can be said is structural. The compressor is the noise, and the headroom above is your friend: a unit with 2.9× the capacity it needs satisfies its setpoint quickly and spends most of the day off. Running it hard while you are out and on a lower fan setting overnight is a better noise strategy than any model choice we can support with data.

A portable dehumidifier dries the air that reaches it. Doors matter as much as capacity: a machine in the bathroom with the door shut is drying a bathroom. If the hose route puts the machine next to the tub, leave the bathroom and bedroom doors open while it runs, or accept that you are drying the rooms nearest the drain first. If the damp is concentrated in one room, it is often better to put the machine there and live with the bucket for that room than to dry the whole apartment from the wrong end.

Set it to hold somewhere between 30% and 50% relative humidity. Below about 30% the air becomes uncomfortably dry; above 60% is the range where mould growth is supported, which is usually the point of buying one.

When a dehumidifier is not the fix

Bathroom steam with no working extractor. A dehumidifier fighting the output of a daily shower is working against a source that a fan would remove at the point it is produced. If the bathroom fan is missing or broken, that is the first thing to raise, and we make the full case on the bathroom dehumidifier page.

A leak. A damp patch that grows after rain, sits under a window frame or appears below a neighbour’s bathroom is water getting in, not humidity condensing out. A dehumidifier will lower the reading and leave the cause in place. Report it to whoever maintains the building before you buy anything.

Winter window condensation on its own. Water streaming down cold glass is a surface-temperature problem as much as a humidity one. A heated apartment at 68°F held at 50% RH has a dew point of about 48.7°F; at 60% it rises to about 53.6°F. Any glass colder than the dew point will sweat, and single glazing on a freezing night can sit below either figure. Closets and cupboards. An enclosed space with a small volume of air is a different job from a room, and a very small unit can suit it. The bedroom dehumidifier page puts those thermoelectric minis on the same axis as a compressor unit so you can see the difference in scale. Our catalogue contains no desiccant units, which are the usual choice for sealed storage, so we cannot recommend one.
