What size dehumidifier do I need?

The number itself takes ten seconds to work out. What takes judgement is choosing the inputs — deciding honestly how damp the space is, and knowing which of the things in your basement the sizing chart never counted.

The only specification worth sizing on

A dehumidifier has exactly one number that is measured to a published standard: how many pints of water it pulls out of the air in twenty-four hours. That figure is tested. Everything else printed on the carton is a claim by the person selling it.

The square-footage claim is the worst of them, because it looks like a specification. It is not one. No test defines it, no body audits it, and manufacturers set it however they like. In our own product corpus, three separate units all rated at 155 pints per day publish coverage claims of 7,500, 6,000, 6,000 square feet — and a 160-pint unit, more capable than any of the three, publishes 2,500. The strongest machine in that group claims the least coverage of any of them.

Those four numbers cannot all be right, and there is no way to tell which one is, so the sensible response is to stop reading that line entirely. Size on pints per day. If a listing does not state a pints-per-day figure at all, that is itself the answer.

One machine, two numbers

In 2019 the US Department of Energy moved the dehumidifier test condition from 80°F down to 65°F. A dehumidifier removes less water from colder air, so the same hardware, unchanged, started earning a smaller number. The ratio is about 0.71 — a drop of roughly 29%.

Concretely: a unit sold today as 50 pints is the same class of machine that was sold before 2019 as 70 pints. Nothing improved and nothing got worse. Only the thermometer in the test lab moved.

This causes two different mistakes, and it is worth separating them, because most articles blur the two into one warning:

Reading a pre-2019 chart against a modern label. Older charts print old-scale pints. Match one of those figures to a number on a box today and you buy about 41% more machine than the chart asked for. That costs money and floor space; it does not leave you wet.

A nameplate “70 pint” unit bought in 2016, or picked up second-hand, delivers about 50 pints on today’s test — and less again in a basement that sits below 65°F. The label overstates what you will actually get out of it.

Judging the dampness band honestly

The band matters more than anything else you will type into a calculator, and it is the one input nobody can check for you. The published band names — damp, very damp, wet, extremely wet — come with relative-humidity ranges, which is not much help if you do not own a hygrometer. So here is what each band looks and smells like in an actual basement.

Two things push people to rate themselves a band too low. The first is that the smell is a mould indicator, not a humidity meter. Mould begins to grow above about 60% relative humidity and carries on growing at 70% and 80%, so “it smells musty” is a lower bound, not a reading. The second is timing: most people judge their basement on the day they happen to be thinking about it, which is rarely the worst fortnight in August after four days of rain.

The fix costs about fifteen dollars. Put a hygrometer in the worst corner — not at the foot of the stairs where the conditioned air from the house arrives — and leave it a week. If you would rather not wait, take the band you first picked and go one worse. You will be right more often than you are wrong.

One thing the bands will not tell you: whether surfaces sweat. Condensation is not really a humidity problem, it is a surface-temperature problem. Water appears on a cold water pipe because the pipe is below the dew point of the air around it, which is why one basement can run at 70% with dry walls while another beads up at 60% because its foundation is colder. Aim to hold the space between 30% and 50%, with 45% a sensible setpoint, and the sweating stops being a question.

Why square footage is a weak input

Floor area is a stand-in for volume, and volume is a stand-in for the thing that actually decides the answer: how much water enters the space per day. A dehumidifier does not dry a room once and finish. It removes water at the rate water arrives, for as long as water keeps arriving. Floor area tells you very little about that rate.

Take two basements of the same 1,200 square feet. One was poured in 1998: sealed slab, a lidded sump, a bathroom that vents outdoors, nothing stored on the floor. The other dates from 1935, has a dirt floor under half of it, a sump with no cover, and a drying rack that is never empty. The chart gives both the same starting number. The daily water load differs by several times.

Three specific things the footprint hides. Ceiling height: the chart assumes something like a standard eight-foot ceiling, so a twelve-foot workshop holds half as much air again as its plan suggests. Connection to the rest of the house: an open stairwell with no door means you are not drying a basement, you are drying whatever share of the house convects down into it. Where the water comes from: a space that is damp because of soil vapour has a source that never stops, while a space that is damp because someone showers down there has a source you can vent.

That is why the dampness band deserves more of your attention than the tape measure. Get the band right and a rough footprint is fine; get the band wrong and a surveyed-to-the-inch footprint will not save the answer.

Two things are worth noticing in that table, and the second one surprises most people.

First, the whole grid is narrow. From a small dry-ish room to a three-thousand-square-foot soaking one, the requirement runs from 7 to 26 pints a day on the modern scale. Doubling the footprint does not double the number, and moving one band across usually moves it by a pint or two.

Second, every figure in it is below the smallest dehumidifier most people would sensibly buy for a basement, which is a modern 50-pint unit — 70 pints on the old scale. That is not an error in the chart. This kind of table describes a minimum: the capacity below which the machine simply cannot keep up. It was never meant to pick your model, and reading it as a shopping instruction is how people end up with a 20-pint bedroom unit in a 1,500 square foot basement, wondering why it runs constantly and the room still smells.

What the chart does not count

The table above knows two things about your house: its floor area, and one word about how wet it is. Everything else that puts water into the air has to arrive through that single word. These are the sources that most often push a space up a band or two, in rough order of how much they matter:

The chart handles all of that with one blunt instrument: move up a band. On a 1,400 square foot basement, going from damp to extremely wet takes the requirement from 13 to 17 pints a day — 4 pints, across a chart whose entire range is 7 to 26. It is a coarse instrument, and that is an argument for using it generously rather than precisely. If you dry laundry indoors, call the space extremely wet and stop arguing with yourself about the walls.

Crawl spaces are a different problem

A crawl space is not a small basement. It is unconditioned, it runs colder, and in most houses a good share of its floor is soil or a thin sheet of polythene over soil. We size crawl spaces up by 40%, and we would rather tell you plainly that this is a practitioner’s adjustment than dress it up as a standard, because it is not one.

There are two reasons behind it. The first is the source: bare ground is a moisture supply that never runs out, so the space is not drying towards an end state, it is being held against a continuous input. The second is the same physics as the 2019 test change — a refrigerant dehumidifier loses capacity as air gets colder, and a crawl space in spring sits well below the 65°F the modern rating is measured at. The machine will not deliver its nameplate down there, and the adjustment is what buys that back.

The size of the adjustment: a 1,500 square foot wet space needs 16 pints a day as a basement (22 old scale) and 22 as a crawl space (31 old scale). That is also the point at which sealing the ground starts to look cheaper than running a bigger machine forever.

Worked example

A 1990s basement with a drying rack in it

The arithmetic says 17 pints a day. The machine this owner will actually buy does 50 or more, because that is where the market starts. The chart’s real job was never to pick the model — it was to tell you that a 20-pint bedroom unit will lose, and that you do not need a ducted whole-house system either.

Why bigger is usually the safer mistake

Nearly every buyer arrives with the instinct that an oversized dehumidifier will waste electricity, or dry the room out too much, or be louder. None of those is how the machine works, and the instinct costs people money in the opposite direction.

It is thermostatically controlled. A dehumidifier runs to a humidistat setpoint and then stops. Set it to 45% and an oversized unit reaches that and switches off. An undersized one never reaches it, which means the undersized machine is the one that runs twenty-four hours a day. The oversized machine is not the one with the high duty cycle. That is exactly backwards from how it feels.

Noise is running time, not peak volume. Compressor noise is roughly constant while the machine is on, so the amount of noise you live with is set by how many hours a day it is on. A larger unit satisfies the room in shorter runs, and on most of them the fan sits at a lower speed to do it. The counterintuitive result is that the bigger machine is usually the quieter one in the room, because you hear it less often.

Capacity margin keeps the coil out of frost. A refrigerant unit working flat out in a cold basement can drop its coil below freezing, at which point it stops removing water and spends its time defrosting instead. A machine with margin in hand runs in shorter bursts with warmer coil temperatures and hits that far less often. This is the same temperature sensitivity that the 2019 rating change exists to describe, showing up as a practical failure mode.

The bucket does not fill faster. The water removed over a week is set by how much water enters the space, not by the size of the machine. A larger unit collects the same weekly total in fewer, longer runs. Either way, plumb a hose to a drain or fit a condensate pump — emptying a bucket by hand is how a working dehumidifier ends up switched off in the corner.

The honest limits on this argument: a larger unit costs more, takes more floor space, and a very large machine in a small sealed room will short-cycle, which is hard on a compressor and no good for anything. The rule is margin, not maximum. Ours is roughly one and a half to three times the computed figure, which for almost every basement in the table above lands on the 5080 pint class — and which is, not coincidentally, where the market’s best-supported units sit.

What this page cannot tell you

We have never run any of these units in a basement or a crawl space, and we are not going to write that we have. That trade costs us the one claim every competing page makes, and it buys something better: everything asserted here is checkable against a published rule or a listing you can open yourself.

So there are questions this method genuinely cannot answer. It cannot tell you which unit is quieter in decibels — the noise figures on these listings are not measured to a common standard and we will not repeat them as though they were. It cannot tell you the running cost per pint, because integrated energy factor is published for Energy Star models but is missing or inconsistent on most retail listings. And it cannot tell you which of these machines is still working in year three, which is probably the question you most want answered. For that, the owner threads on Reddit and the HVAC forums are worth more than any product page, including this one, and we earn nothing when you go and read them.
